Olympic bronze medalist Deena Kastor withdraws from U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Marathon

2/10/2016

LOS ANGELES -- Deena Kastor, 2004 Olympic bronze medalist in the marathon and American record holder in the marathon and half marathon, has announced her withdrawal from the U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Marathon due to injury.

“Our Mammoth Track Club team has been in Folsom, California for sea level training camp for two and a half weeks,” Kastor said. “After months of working hard, I strained my glute muscle in practice while on the American River Trail. I was diligent in resting, but my glute just won't settle down.

“I look forward to witnessing a great Olympic Trials in Los Angeles, cheering on my Mammoth Track Club teammates and celebrating the members of the U.S. Olympic Team.”

Kastor (Mammoth Lakes, California) was the fourth-fastest qualifier in the women’s field. Scheduled to compete in her fourth Olympic Trials Marathon, Kastor was looking to make her fourth Olympic team. After competing in the 10,000 meters at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Kastor was a marathoner in the 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games, taking home bronze in Athens in 2004. She placed sixth in the 2012 Olympic Trials Marathon.
